Looking for an all around prime lens for your Nikon film SLR? Then I think the Nikon 35mm f2.5 E might just be for you. This lens is part of the affordable series E lenses by Nikon loved by beginners and amateurs due to its price point. For me, 35mm on a full frame is the perfect focal length if you can only carry one lens, specially if you like a little more context in your photos. A perfect compromise between the normal 50mm and the wide 28mm lens without the distortion a wide angle lens usually have.

The Nikon 35mm f2.5 E lens is small and lightweight like any other series E lenses. I have a Nikon 28mm f2.8 E lens, and I am in love with how compact these lenses are. I also like the design of these lenses especially the silver accent, perfect for a silver body Nikon SLR.

As for performance, well the Nikon 35mm f2.5 E did pretty good with obvious shortcomings. I’m no technical guy in my reviews but I can tell you that my copy is a little soft wide open. But other than that I am very pleased with the photos I was able to get. Although I must say, what’s the deal with the f2.5 aperture? I guess it’s a bit faster than the usual f2.8 but will a .3 difference be even noticable? As for focusing, the lens do focus smoothly although the focus throw is a bit long for my liking, but I’m not complaining 🙂

As mentioned, the 35mm focal lenght is very versatile. You can still put focus on your subject while giving your photos a little more breathing room. This is also my go-to-lens for street photography when I’m not feeling adventurous with my 28mm since I don’t have to be as close to my subject.

How does the lens perform in low light you may ask, well i guess the f2.5 is always better than a f2.8? Ofcourse this is not the fastest lens but if you use a higher speed film, you can definitely get away with some indoor shots with a stable hands.

So there you have it, an affordable and capable 35mm lens. Usually a 35mm lens comes with a high price but the Nikon 35mm f2.5 E is an exception. If you are looking for an all around prime lens that won’t break bank then you should give this lens a try.
