The Nikon F100 is like any modern Nikon DSLRs aside that it shoots film. This beast of a camera is slowly becoming my favorite film camera from my collection which is ironic because one of the reasons why I started shooting film is to be more analog. Well i guess I got the best of both worlds. The Nikon F100 also reminds me of my first Nikon DSLR – the Nikon D300s, both prosumer cameras during their time though the Nikon F100 is a full frame camera because it uses a 35mm film vs the APS-C sensor on the Nikon D300s.

And just like any Nikon prosumer cameras, the Nikon F100 is built to last, it has a larger body compared to other SLRs but smaller in size than the more expensive pro film SLRs the Nikon F4 and F5. The Nikon F100 is surprisingly easy to handle (i have small hands) despite its bulk and the ergonomics is nothing but excellent, all the buttons and dials are easily accesible and you can create custom settings.

As for taking photos, you can’t ask for more! You can shoot in full manual or automatic mode, it has an excellent focus speed/accuracy and is well known for its top class exposure metering which you can choose from matrix, center, and spot. The Nikon F mount also gives you access to Nikon’s abundant lens selections from their modern to vintage glasses.
The photos below are shot using a Nikkor 50mm f1.8D (AF) and Nikon 24mm f2.8 series E (MF) in aperture priority mode. All using a roll of Fujifilm 200 film.

One thing to note is that the camera uses 4 AA batteries which is highly accesible but I would recommend having an extra handy incase you run out of power when you’re out and about.

You can have the Nikon F100 today at $150-$250 depending on the package and condition but I had mine for practically free. Check out my guide on how to buy film cameras to save you a few bucks and a lot of headaches.

And there you have it, the Nikon F100 film SLR. If you don’t mind the size and are looking for an all around, reliable film camera or unsure wether a full manual, mechanical camera is for you, I highly recommend the Nikon F100 (or its younger brother the Nikon F80). Since they are “newer” than other film SLR, you are most likely saving yourself on CLA or other hidden issues waiting to happen.
